On this page is a comprehensive guide to help you choose the right veil for you and your dress. This guide is designed to help decode all of the different terms and phrases used by bridal shops and veil designers.

When you first start looking for a veil, get an idea of how you want to wear your hair. Do you what to wear the veil high on your head or low in the back near the base of your head. This will help you to know how long you will want your veil.

Also decide if you want to wear your veil over your face and if you will wear your veil during the reception.

If you choose to wear your veil over your face, you will need at least a two layer veil or two tiers. You will also want the design or ribbon to be double faced on the top layer so the veil will look beautiful when it is flipped over your face as well as when it is back.

If you are going to wear you veil during the reception you will want to keep your veil short enough that you can sit comfortable without it getting in the way. You can also have your veil designed to have longer layers removable so you can have an elegant formal look during the ceremony and a more casual look during the reception.

When choosing your veil, keep your dress in mind. If your dress is very formal then you do not want to get a casual style veil or just the opposite. If your dress is casual and you are planning on a casual wedding, you do not want to get a very formal veil.

Also the style of your dress will have a big influence on your veil. If your dress has lots of silver thread and beading on it, then your veil should have some silver on it too. If your dress has pearls and sequins, then silver accents might not be right.

Once you have thought about the items above and you have an idea of how you want to style you hair you can start shopping for your veil.

First pick the length:
Shoulder 15-20"long
Elbow 20-25"
Waist 25-30"
Fingertip 30-36"
Waltz 45"
Floor 72"
Chapel 90"
Cathedral 120"
Royal Cathedral 144"

The lengths above are guidelines or industry standards. They can be adjusted to fit your unique tastes or your height.

Next decide how full you want your veil or how poofy you want the veil to be. There are two ways to do that. One is by how many layers or tiers it has. The other is how wide the fabric is.

54" wide fabric will create the least amount of fullness
72" wide fabric is medium or standard fullness
108" wide is the fullest.
Or ask the designer to cut the fabric somewhere in between to create the perfect fullness for you.

You can also change the fullness with the amount of tiers you use. One layer will be less full than two or even three. If you want more or less poof, change the width and the layers to get different fullness

Then pick the cut or shape of your veil.
the basic shapes are:

Standard cut (two or three separate layers)

You many also vary the cut slightly to suit your personal tastes

Pick your color.
Their are several shade of whites and Ivory's as well as many other colors to choose from to match your dress or compliment your color theme. Be sure you bring a swatch of the fabric that you want the color to match. Bringing your dress is always the best bet and also the easiest way to ensure you pick the right veil.

Now to add your personality to your veil. Once you have the bones of your veil complete, it is time to give it some style. This could be as simple as an infinity edge or as elaborate as lace and beading. There are countless options to choose from and many more combinations. Refer to your dress and theme of your wedding for a starting point.
